Please e-mail gjbenson77@gmail.com if:

-you don't think you are in it, and want to be included; I need your first & last name, mailing address, ph #, e-mail address, names/birthdates of your kids (month/year)

-you are no longer homeschooling, and don’t want to be included in this year’s directory

-you want to edit some information from last year’s directory

-you know someone who just started homeschooling or moved into the area who might want to be included in this year’s directory

Thanks very much in advance.  (I expect to have it ready to e-mail out in a week or two; that is the end of November/09.)

THE SANOFI-AVENTIS BIOTALENT CHALLENGE:

A SCIENCE COMPETITION OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS

The Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge (SABC) is a national science competition open to all high-school age students in Canada. In the Saskatoon region a Junior category for grade seven and eight age students is included in the Challenge. The SABC Challenge focuses on biotechnology: the science of researching and developing biological solutions that can be applied to agriculture, the environment, medicine and many more areas that have a direct impact on people's daily lives.

The top entries earn substantial cash prizes: since its beginning the SABC has given out nearly half a million dollars in scholarships and awards. The national winner of the 2008-2009 Challenge was a student from Saskatoon.

Students are free to propose their own research, to explore topics they're passionate about. They collaborate with professional mentors-real scientists in real labs-to do work that has practical, meaningful applications and sometimes even make headlines.

Students submit their research proposals to Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge to enter. Selected projects are matched with scientist mentors and given access to appropriate laboratory facilities. Regional competitions are held in March and April to determine finalists; the national competition is held at the headquarters of the National Research Council Canada in Ottawa. The top two national project teams earn the chance to compete in the Sanofi-Aventis Biotechnology Industry Organization's (BIO) Annual International Convention.

GENOME PRAIRIE and KRYTAR Consolidated Services Ltd are co-coordinators for the 2009-2010 Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge in the Saskatoon region. For further information about the SABC Challenge contact John Taras or Ron Krysa at (306) 652-1785 - KRYTAR@shaw.ca and visit the Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge at www.sanofibiotalentchallenge.ca.

Applications for the 2010 Saskatoon Regional Competition will be accepted between Oct 31st, 2009 and November 30th, 2009. The final competition will be held April 12, 2010 at the College of Agriculture and Bioresources at the University of Saskatchewan.

Does anyone remember the Histori.ca short films that CBC airs sometimes?

The acclaimed Historica Minutes are one-minute movies that portray exciting and important stories from Canada's past.

These brief but inspiring history highlights are useful as teaching aids — the Historica Minutes are screened in many classrooms across Canada.

The Minutes have been a familiar part of Canada's cultural landscape for more than ten years. So familiar, in fact, they have been imitated and parodied by comedians.

Whether the Historica Minutes make you laugh or cry, one thing is certain — Canadian history is more interesting by the minute.  Go to www.histori.ca for more details.

I would like to buy the DVD of the entire collection of the Historica minutes.  It is $25 Canadian including taxes.  I was wondering if anyone would like to contribute to this, and perhaps we could keep it in Nedra's office for all homeschoolers to borrow?  Please contact me if interested.

"Sing Choirs of Angels"

The award winning Saskatoon Children's Choir (SCC), under the direction of Artistic Director Phoebe Voigts, will be joined by a number of professional string and brass players from Saskatoon for its annual Christmas concert "Sing Choirs of Angels".

The concert takes place on November 27 and 28, 2009 at 7:30 pm at Third Avenue United Church in Saskatoon, and will feature the angelic voices of the choristers, accompanied by pianist Michelle Aalders. The program features Festiva Entrata by Flor Peeters, and includes classical and contemporary choral music by Bach, Halley, Stroope and Jenkins, as well as the choir's stunning renditions of traditional seasonal favourites.

"We are delighted to be joined by so many Saskatoon's professional musicians again for this year's concert," said Voigts.  "Their presence not only enriches the selections on the program, but also creates a wonderful learning experience for our choristers."

The SCC is a strong presence on the world choral stage, including performances in France, Spain, Austria, the Czech Republic, China, the United States and Canada. This past summer they returned from Europe with the City of Vienna Prize for the best overall choir from the Summa Cum Laude Festival in Vienna.

Tickets (reserved seating) are $17 and are available at McNally Robinson Booksellers and at the door.

Wintershines 2010 Festival

Hi all, I have been asked to help with this Saskatoon event (because I admitted I like being outside in the winter!) and I have chosen to help by coordinating volunteers for a variety of tasks throughout the two weeks. This event takes place in Saskatoon during January 23 - February 7th and is meant to be a celebration of Saskatoon's winter activities and culture. If anyone will be in Saskatoon and would like to spend some time volunteering for a great winter festival, please let me know. Opportunities would include setup and clean up, the information tent (heated…mostly!) and various events such as snow carving, ice carving, outside dance parties, ticket/wristband sales, etc. There are benefits to being a volunteer, one of which are free passes to the outdoor events taking place at the Farmer’s Market during the two weeks. Shifts would range from 2 hours to 3 hours on any day and you can volunteer for any days and as many shifts as you like. Mostly it is Friday-Sundays where we need assistance. There will be events all over the city during these two weeks, but the volunteers are mostly required at the Farmer's Market building and downtown.

Feel free to spread the word to friends and relatives who may wish to help out.

Looking forward to winter, sorry, I know…. But I AM!

Please contact me at clmquintin@gmail.com for more information or to volunteer for a shift.

Creative Dance

Tina Bertoncini is again offering a children’s contemporary dance class for the home-based education community through the University School of Dance.  Please note that there is a change in time and day from what has been advertised in the College of Kinesiology Activities Guide.

The creative life of each student as expressed through movement forms the basis of the class.  The final presentation of a choreographed dance piece is developed in collaboration with the participants.  The program is built on contemporary dance technique, emphasizing flexibility, balance, strength and inner awareness.  Education about a healthy and holistic understanding of the body also plays a role.

Tina Bertoncini holds a B.Ed from the U of S, contemporary dance and choreography training from Concordia University in Montreal, and many years of teaching experience. She has recently been studying the philosophies of Waldorf education and the Reggio Emilia approach. She is also an enthusiastic proponent of home-based education.

Classes will be held on Mondays at 1:15 – 2:15 in the R.J.D. Williams dance studio.  Classes begin Monday, September 14, 2009.  Registration takes place through the College of Kinesiology. Please refer to the Activities Guide, phone 966-1001, or visit www.usask.ca/kinesiology

myWISEmentor:  Mentoring for girls interested in science and engineering

At the University of Saskatchewan we are launching a new program for Saskatchewan girls, ages 11-18, to give them access via email to women in, or pursuing, careers in science and engineering.  We are inviting girls and their parents to visit our myWISEmentor website (www.myWISEmentor.com) to see if this free program might interest them.

The myWISEmentor program is a collaboration of Dr. Julita Vassileva, Prairie Chair for Women in Science and Engineering, at the University of Saskatchewan and the College of Engineering's Office of Outreach & Transition Programs.  This is an opportunity for girls 11-18 to explore their interest in a career in science, math or engineering by asking questions of a female mentor.  The mentor-mentee relationship is based on openness and encouragement, constructive feedback, and mutual trust and respect. Mentors and mentees communicate through email to overcome the challenges imposed by time and distance in a province as large as Saskatchewan. Program staff match each girl with a mentor based on common interests and hobbies. Once a student has been paired with a mentor, they remain matched until the program ends in May.

Students interested in becoming mentees should visit the myWISEmentor website (www.mywisementor.com) to learn more about the program.  Should they wish to apply, the application can be completed online or a PDF application form can be downloaded from the website.  In either case a Participation Agreement form (available for download) must be signed by a parent or guardian and mailed to the myWISEmentor office. We will let the student know by email if their application has been successful. This email will also provide information about how to contact their mentor and tips for getting started.

All information is considered confidential and is only used only by program staff to match a mentee with a mentor.

Inquiries by email (Prairie_WISE@cs.usask.ca) or phone (306-966-1448) are welcome.

Science Club

I'd like to offer the opportunity for students between 8-10 years old (give or take!) to get together at my house once every few weeks to do different science experiments, between September and June. It would be something similar to what the University does with their students, only I will be limiting it to nine additional students not including mine (my son didn't do too well with the large class size there), and would like parents to stay and have fun with us. I would ask for about $20 to cover materials and snacks and would have all necessary materials ready when you get here. Note we have a dog, a cat, and lots of peanuts, and unfortunately can't guarantee any of those won't be around the area where we would do our experiments! If it's only a food allergy and not a contact allergy, I can ensure I have nut free snacks or you can bring your own. I am currently leaning to a Friday or Thursday but not sure of the time just yet. Will post a list of dates and experiments if there is enough interest. I am thinking about an hour of experiments and likely some play time afterwards.

If you are interested please email

clmquintin@gmail.com

 Thanks!

Opportunity for Polar Bear and Beluga Expedition

If anyone is interested in participating in an expedition to Churchill Manitoba in October of 2010, please let me know. The more people we have, the better deal I will be able to work with the polar bear/beluga viewing companies and VIA Rail. The best way to utilize the service is to drive to Hudson Bay Saskatchewan, and hop on the train. It would leave late at night and would be two nights on the train, arriving early in the morning at Churchill. Since I just got back from a ten day trip to Vancouver (two train nights each way), I know it's doable without going too crazy, lol.  Flying in is hugely expensive regardless. Right now, with no discounts for a group, the fare is about $225 return for anyone over 11, and $115 for children under 12. This does not include activities in Churchill and is based on this year's fares (next year's are not posted yet). I would have to request all students are accompanied by an adult. If we get enough people going, I am hopeful that we can have a train car to ourselves. These fares are based on reclinable seats but it looks like double sleeper cars can be done for a significant increase in cost; however, then we wouldn't be all together of course and that would be part of the fun!

Please email me at

clmquintin@gmail.com if you are interested in how this might shake out. If there is enough interest, I will contact VIA and some Churchill operators to see what sort of deal we can get for activities and accommodations. I would likely need firm participation numbers in the new year and deposits shortly after; hope this is okay.

Cheers,

Carol-Lynne

CREATIVE WRITING

Anyone interested in creative writing? I've taken a very loooong break from facilitating the classes and am thinking about starting up again. If anyone is interested, let me know the age of the children or teens and what kind of writing they're into. I can run beginner, intermediate, or advanced classes in any genre (poetry, short stories, novels and novellas, creative non-fiction, non-fiction, essays, etc.) but I really enjoy running a series of classes that explore a little of everything. We will take the participants' work from conception to publication and will hold a reading at the end of the classes. I know that some of you older kids are working on novels at present - I would be excited to run a class in which we work on those novels in a group environment and try to get them to completion. I would also be happy to run another essay writing class if there is enough interest. I'd also be interested in running an adult class for you parents who have always wanted to write but have never made the time.

For those of you who don't know me, I am a writer/editor/academic coordinator/homeschooling mom of three. I run an online magazine and have been facilitating creative writing workshops for 10 years. Do email me for more information or to express interest. Carla Atherton: c.atherton@sasktel.net.

I can't believe it's almost September already!

THINK. STUDY. SPEAK. DEBATE.

FIRST CLASS MOVED TO SEPTEMBER 9 instead of September 2.

Contact Melissa Ong before the class- elevenongs@link.ca

The Saskatoon Home Educated Debaters was started six years ago by Carol Crosson, a homeschooling mom.  We have had anywhere from 10 to 20 students a year encompassing Grades 5 to 12.   The club has had a history of much success.  Students participate in regional tournaments sponsored by the Saskatchewan Elocution and Debate Association (SEDA) and have qualified and participated in the provincial tournament.  We have had students chosen as part of the Saskatchewan Team for National Debate Competitions, the Canadian National High School Debate Championships, the Junior National Debate Championships, and the National Debate Seminar. The club has also participated in Mock Trials sponsored by the Law Society of Saskatchewan as well as Model Legislature.

There are countless skills students learn in debate.   While people generally think that debate is only for those interested in legal or political careers, the whole process of preparing for a debate and debating provides such a learning and growth experience for any student.  Between the research on current issues and underlying issues and then developing thinking skills, public speaking and debating strategy, a student has a real opportunity to grow and gain skills that can enable him or her to find and have a voice and impact their community.  You will never be the same in confidence and your ability to assess world affairs and research viewpoints on both sides of a topic.

Saskatoon Home Educated Debaters meet once a week on Wednesday  mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Ong residence, 5550 Clarence Ave. South, Saskatoon.    While there is work do be done, we do have a lot fun working together.

TO REQUEST AN APPLICATION AND FOR MORE INFORMATION

contact Melissa Ong at elevenongs@link.ca or (306)653-4030

FIRST CLASS IS ON SEPTEMBER 9, 2009.

Additional Note:

STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND THE DEBATE DAY CAMP HOSTED BY SEDA on August 17-21, 2009 at Walter Murray Collegiate.  This is for students in grades 5-12, Beginner, Advanced and Leadership levels.  For more information visit   www.saskdebate.com

Travelling

We've been in contact with some of you in the past year or two, but for the others, I’ll introduce ourselves.  We are the Loewens: parents, educators, and also tour guides, with a passion to show high school students the culture, beauty, and treasures of Europe. If you’ve ever considered an educational tour, a field trip, or grad trip to Europe, we are offering 6 new tours to various countries on the European continent.  We’ve planned these for the off-season in order to give the students a price break, plus a chance to enjoy Europe without all the tourist crowds.

Yes, our tours are educational, but designed so you are having too much fun to notice!  Of course we’ll explain what you’re seeing, but you’ll hear no long, boring history lectures; rather you’ll be having hands-on fun.  Ride the elevator to the very top of the Eiffel Tower, view Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel paintings up close, wonder at (and taste if you dare!) the unusual edibles in the Vienna market, climb up inside a windmill in Holland, ride a gondola to the highest German peak in the Alps, slide down a wooden slide deep beneath the surface of the earth in Salzburg’s salt mine, and the list goes on and on.  Check www.loewentours.com for photos and much more!

Our tours are jam-packed with sights and activities, giving the students a rich experience. Since these are not bus tours we travel by local transportation, including trains and trams. We also stay in quality youth hostels or small family-run hotels, so the students have opportunities to meet other Europeans.

Another option, if you have a group of 15+ students we can also customize a tour for your group.  Let us know the places you’re interested in, and the dates that suit you, and we’ll take it from there.  Loewentours provides the tour guides as well as chaperones.  If you would like references, we’ll be happy to supply those; just ask.

We would be pleased if you would post the enclosed flyer in a location where your students can view it.  We have also attached a link to our Loewentours flyer online.  If your students have access to a computer, would you please forward it to them or post it for your students to view? Just paste the following link in your browser bar: http://www.loewentours.com/forms/Loewentours_Flyer.pdf

Thanks so much!

We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

The Loewens
