Saskatoon Blades Hockey Game

Hello Hockey Fans! My name is Trevor Funk and our family has been involved in homeschooling for 7 years. My son and I are avid Saskatoon Blades fans and would like to organize a social outing to a Blades game for other homeschooling families. As of this email the Blades are tied for 3rd place in their conference and only 2 points behind the Moose Jaw Warriors! If you are interested in enjoying a great hockey game and meeting other homeschooling kids and families see the details below:

Saskatoon Blades vs Moose Jaw Warriors; 7:00PM Friday, February 3rd.

Adult tickets $15.75, Youth (13-17) $10.50, Children (12 and under) $8.40 (taxes included)

Minimum 10 people for group rate pricing.

Depending on whether other groups are attending and availability, the Blades can accomodate mobility impaired individuals. Please inform me in your reply if this would be required and I will inquire further.

If interested please reply to me by email, t-rev@shaw.ca, by Monday, January 30. Indicate the number and type of tickets that are required. Once group of tickets are purchased there will be no refunds. Once the numbers are finalized I will email further instructions as to payment for tickets. If you have any other questions or comments please let me know!

Come prepared to enjoy a friendly social outing with other homeschool families and to cheer on our team

Wet Paint Pottery

I would like to let other homeschoolers know that there is a pottery studio in Saskatoon located at #5 – 3110 8th Street East (in Bedford Square).

The owner, Lisa, is willing to set up classes or scheduled times that homeschoolers would be able to come in and use the studio. She has some great ideas for ways to incorporate pottery projects into your homeschool studies.

Contact her at www.wetpaintpottery.com if you are interested.

Tubing Day at Table Mountain

Okay last date change, by request.....The weather looks like it's going to be great on Thursday, January 26th (so far). Is anyone interested in meeting at Table Mountain for an afternoon of tubing? It's $8 per person, must be 42" (3'6 I think?) to go on the tubes. They have two tube runs and a magic carpet to take you to the top. Chalet is open for coffee/hot chocolate/food. Tube park is open 1-4. For those that want to, we could make it a ski day too, but that requires a school application, grades, levels, etc and doubles the price. I'm thinking an afternoon of tubing would be a hoot. Please email me at clmquintin@gmail.com.

thanks,

Carol-Lynne

Please note the Kids' Trek Christmas Party and Dance has been cancelled due to low ticket sales. We will try again for another festive occasion! In the meantime, please let me know at clmquintin@gmail.com what day/time/month works best for your family for a Christmas party and old-fashioned barn dance. We think it would be a lot of fun, but we missed the mark here somehow, so we'd love your feedback.

URGENTLY LOOKING FOR ACTOR VOLUNTEERS

I am teaching a negotiation class at the University College of Law and am looking for volunteers to act as "clients" in a video taped negotiation.  The volunteer would either be the defendant company or plaintiff with a personal injury.  The "lawyer" student would contact them next week to arrange for a one hour interview and then there is a one hour negotiation the following week.  If the volunteer "client" would like a copy of the video they may have one - they just need to bring a memory stick.  I will email the roles to the volunteers by Monday.

This is an opportunity for any adults who like to act :) But I'm also happy to have an older teenager who would feel comfortable acting the role of an adult :)

Volunteers may participate in more than one negotiation if they'd like (same scenario, just working with different "lawyer" students).

If you'd be so kind as to pass this request through your various social networks I would be grateful for your assistance.  Volunteers may contact me by email at cpanko@millerthomson.com.

Thanks!

Charmaine Panko

THINK. STUDY. SPEAK. DEBATE. WHY NOT?

There are countless skills students learn in debate. While people generally think that debate is only for those interested in legal or political careers, the whole process of preparing for a debate and debating provides such a learning and growth experience for any student. Between the research on current issues and underlying issues and then developing thinking skills, public speaking and debating strategy, a student has a real opportunity to grow and gain skills that can enable him or her to find and have a voice and impact their community. You will never be the same in confidence and your ability to assess world affairs and research viewpoints on both sides of a topic.

Saskatoon Home Educated Debaters (SHED) meet once a week on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.. Homeschooled Students in Grade 5-12 are invited to join the club. The club participates in tournaments sponsored by the Saskatchewan Elocution and Debate Association.

FIRST CLUB MEETING IS ON WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2011.

History Club

Hi everyone, I am running another History Club in my home again this year. Last year's club was a success, with an interactive focus on Canadian History. This year's club will be aimed at students aged 10-12 or so.

This club will start likely the third week in September and will again be held at my house, every second Tuesday afternoon or so. This time, each student will do two projects, one before Christmas and one after Christmas. Each student will choose a country, culture or historical event that interests them, and do small projects over the term to make one larger completed project. Each time the club meets, the kids will show the rest of the club their ongoing project and explain what they have discovered. For example, if a student were to research "Great Britain", he might present one day on geography, one day on popular sports, one day on languages, one day on foods, etc. They can really choose whatever they want - I will draw up a list to fire their imaginations but if they want to choose something completely different that's cool. So, one project will be completed before Christmas, and one will be completed after Christmas. They can choose to pair up after Christmas for a joint project if they like.

I will help them with some ideas for research material, I have a whole library full of neat things they can use along with other resources. Some of the work will be done at home on their time, but I am scheduling days in between "presentation days" just so the kids have a chance to work on their projects here, and I can help them too, to minimize or eliminate what might need to be done at home.

The projects can take whatever shape the kids want. A presentation folder, a board, a book, a video, whichever they like.

The cost will be $75 this year and we will hopefully have 18 sessions over the year. I am aiming for a four hour afternoon to allow for optional play time - ie kids are welcome at 1, class starts at 1:30, ends at 4, kids are welcome to stay and play til 5.

My home is in Confederation Park if you need to know drive times. If you are interested, please let me know by email at clmquintin@gmail.com. Thanks!

FYI:

I have highlighted all posts for MUSIC LESSONS in yellow.  One of these days I will make this wiki more user friendly, but for now, that should help you wade through the ads.

Piano Lessons in Parkridge

I am an experienced piano teacher who instructs all ages, beginners to advanced, in my home near the Shaw Centre.  “It is my goal to teach students in the way they learn best in the style of music they prefer, inspiring them to become competent players, so that the enjoyment of music will last a lifetime.” Playing styles include:  basic fundamentals for beginner students, classical piano and theory, popular piano, chording, contemporary worship and hymn playing.  RCM examinations, Music Festival and recital participation is encouraged.

I have taught numerous homeschoolers who have completed RCM exams for high school credits and special projects.  In my experience, I have observed that homeschoolers have an advantage, in that piano practicing becomes part of their daily routine during their prime learning time.  For this reason, it is also beneficial for them to take daytime lessons. Daytime and evening lesson times are available.  There is a family tuition rate:  the 3rd family member receives a 10% discount.  You may contact me at 384-3808 or ol.cr@sasktel.net.

KIDS' TREK UPDATE!

At the Homeschool Fair on May 26th, I will have more information about the future of Kids' Trek and I hope that I can find several exploration-oriented families to join us on our next journey. Our next journey will be the big one originally planned for this summer and will include stops at the following cities: Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Quebec City, Moncton, Halifax and your choice of PEI or St. John's. This will take place starting in late June, 2012, and we have two families firmly committed, looking for more. The goal of this 'travel club' is to explore our country together and learn about the people and places across Canada first-hand. I've already seen how much my son has benefitted from our trip to Quebec City this past winter.

Kids have a great time travelling with family but sometimes, for a longer journey, travelling with other kids is the best part. You can come as a whole family or as an individual; no unaccompanied minors however, at least one parent or guardian needs to accompany children under 18 (unless you can argue your point well!). Kids of ANY age are welcome and I would love to have a wide variety of ages join us.

The agenda would include time for scheduled field trips (such as trips to the Fortress at Louisbourg, the Hopewell Rocks, Villages Vacances Valcartier, etc) as well as attractions local to the communities we stop in (heritage parks, historic sites, museums, natural wonders, hiking). Nothing is mandatory and if you and your family wish to go alone to someplace of your own choosing while we are there, that is just fine!

This travel club will be officially created as a non-profit as soon as we can and we will be actively seeking community sponsorship and doing a fair amount of fundraising to make this journey possible at the lowest cost. Right now, travel, accommodations, and most activities still look like about $2500 per person (utilizing group rates, hostels, homestays, and including all flights and train travel), but that can be significantly reduced by sponsorship and fundraising. This is not a family holiday; it is a group educational experience where you have the freedom to choose which activities you and your family would like to participate in.

The long-term goal of this travel club is to engage in travel to a different part of Canada each year, depending on what the group's interests are, to facilitate a generation of kids with a broader understanding of the people and places that make up our very large country.

If you would like more information or want to join us, please email me at clmquintin@gmail.com.

Homeschool families from any part of Canada are welcome to join us.

Thanks!

Carol-Lynne Quintin

Free Homework Help and Study Program for Teens (12-18)

Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization, with a regional office in Saskatoon, that operates a variety of literacy programs in locations across the province. We recruit and train volunteers to work with children, youth and adults in a great array of settings. We also help other community-based organizations set up and run literacy programs for their own participants.

In partnership with the Saskatoon Public Library, Frontier College is piloting a new program for May and June 2011. Our Teen Homework Help/Study Program is geared toward youth ages 12-18 who need extra help with homework, reading, assistance with studying, etc. We are currently recruiting a number of math and science tutors to complement our English and social studies tutors.

The program is being offered at 6 locations of the Saskatoon Public Library from Monday-Saturday (evenings during the week and one Saturday afternoon). If this is something that you might be interested in, please contact the Frontier College office at (306) 374-7323 or via email at sburtney@frontiercollege.ca.

Kids Trek is in Quebec City!

Please have a look at our blog here: http://kidstrek.blogspot.com/?spref=fb as we make our way through Quebec City. Unfortunately, the large trip as originally planned is no longer an option this year. We initially had more than twenty people interested but that has dwindled to only Morgan and myself. Undaunted, we changed our plans and went to Carnavale in Quebec City, and are blogging our experiences. We hope that by reading about the things we do that you will decided to join us for the larger trip out to Halifax and points in between, which is now rescheduled to summer 2012.  It's fun to travel with family, but it is more fun for the kids to travel with friends :) We are learning so much about the history of Quebec and Canada, and having a great time doing it. If you are interested in joining the journey next year, this is the same blog that parents and students can contribute to during that journey. Please email me at clmquintin@gmail.com if you want more information. The more people, the less expensive the journey, as we can get group rates, sponsorship, and of course do fundraising.

Thanks,

Kids Trek' 2011: Discovering Canada

We are now live! Please see our website at www.kidstrek2011.ca and see where we plan on going, how we are doing on fundraising, and why we are going in the first place. Stay tuned for family bios for those families who have confirmed their participation, and if you are interested in learning more and possibly joining us, please contact me at clmquintin@gmail.com

Tonight I am hosting a fundraising evening at my home, where we will be selling Gold Canyon Candles (candles, natural home cleaning supplies, natural skin care), SunSparkSoaps, and of course chocolates will be available :) If you are interested in attending drop me an email as above (I know it's short notice), or call me at 382-2774. 25% of all catalogue prices (through me only) from Gold Canyon will go towards the cost of our trip, and $2 per bar of handmade soap will go to the group as well. The chocolates are $3, and yummy.

Stay tuned for Kids' Trek Family Movie Nights, coming soon to a neighbourhood near you!

Thanks for your support,

Cheers,

Carol-Lynne

Ukulele ("The Little Guitar") . . . For Children !

Your child may wish to play guitar, but is too young or too small . . . get him or her started on the ukulele!

"The Little Guitar" (ukulele) . . . a unique group music experience for children 4 to 8 years old !!

Imagine a campfire, with kids singing and strumming on their guitars . . . now picture smaller guitars!

Here's feedback from one parent:

Thanks again for creating this unique and enjoyable program!

Our son was always anxious to attend and we feel he really thrived within the

group dynamic. His skills as a showman have started to develop as a result

of his participation and I feel his comfort with the instrument assisted in

his smooth transition to guitar.

"The Little Guitar" will help children:

- develop their ear

- explore their creativity

- build confidence

"The Little Guitar"

. . . a fun, easy method that will pave the road

for future musical journeys!

** Quality instruction from a certified music educator !!

Happy fall everyone!

My name is Jacinda and I have a mobile paint-it-yourself pottery business called Glazed Over Ceramics. I have a website to view all the pieces that I carry as well as prices. You can view them at http://www.glazedoverceramics.caI bring the ceramic/pottery painting experience to your location or event - complete with whatever pieces you like, all the glazes, palettes, brushes etc. and look after all the clean-up. I also have access to an 8 ft table and chairs. After the class, I take everything back to my kiln where it is clear glazed and fired and then dropped back off to you in a week. I can offer a workshop atmosphere where I can teach the children a glazing technique or they can simply have free creative flow with their piece. This is such a fun activity and the kids love to see their fired pieces! All pieces are food and dishwasher-safe.

Call me at 381-6220 or email at jacinda@glazedoverceramics.ca to book. Please allow a min of 2 weeks notice to book.

Science Club 2010-2011

I'd like to offer the opportunity for students between 9-11 years old (give or take!) to get together at my house once every few weeks to do different science experiments, between September and June. It would be something similar to what the University does with their students, only I will be limiting it to 6 additional students at most. Parents are welcome to stay to have fun with us. I would ask for about $20 to cover materials and snacks (bring your own snacks if you prefer sugar-free) and would have all necessary materials ready when you get here. Note we have a dog, a cat, and lots of peanuts, and unfortunately can't guarantee any of those won't be around the area where we would do our experiments! If it's only a food allergy and not a contact allergy, I can ensure I have nut free snacks or you can bring your own. I am currently leaning to a Friday or Thursday but not sure of the time just yet. Will post a list of dates and experiments if there is enough interest. I am thinking about an hour of experiments and likely some play time afterwards.

If you are interested please email

clmquintin@gmail.com

 Thanks!

Piano Lessons

My name is Samantha Loewen, I am 25 years old and have been teaching piano in Saskatoon since 2007.   I am currently working on completing my RCM Grade 8 Certification, and will be taking the exam this June.

I typically teach students from the Piano Adventures series, by Faber & Faber, but I am open to using different programs and techniques as each student is individual and will respond to different learning methods differently.

My charge is $12 per half hour lesson, plus books.  I enjoy teaching piano immensely, and am hoping to increase the number of students I teach next year by opening up to teaching during the day.  I hope to eventually teach piano exclusively.   Please contact me for more information, or to register for the fall!
